Dr. Andras Nagy makes SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN Top 10 Honor Roll

Mount Sinai Hospital’s Dr. Andras Nagy has been selected for the first annual SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN Top 10 Honor Roll. The only Canadian selected for the article, Dr. Nagy shares the honour with U.S. President Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg and other luminaries in the June 2009 issue of the magazine.

“I am honoured to be selected among such world-class leaders in science and research. It is great to represent Canada, as I have enjoyed many important research collaborations here in Toronto,” said Dr. Andras Nagy, Senior Investigator, Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital.

Scientific American selected Dr. Nagy for, “demonstrating exceptional leadership and accomplishment in guaranteeing that new technologies and biomedical discoveries are applied to the benefit of humanity.”In March 2009, Dr. Nagy discovered a new method of creating stem cells from adult cells that could lead to possible cures for devastating diseases including spinal cord injury, macular degeneration, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease.

“Dr. Nagy’s research is a huge step forward on the path to new stem cell-based therapies and indicates that researchers at the Lunenfeld are at the leading edge of regenerative medicine,” said Dr. Jim Woodgett, Director of Research for the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital. “We are thrilled that Andras has been included on such a prestigious list, and congratulate him on his incredible research achievements.”
